Composting Solid Waste in Military Contingency Operations
ثبت نشده
چکیده
More than 1,000 boxes of sewage sludge are stockpiled at this base camp. It was composted during the beginning of a pilot study in 2004. Armies around the globe have always had to deal with the problem of solid waste. Today, a large percentage of solid waste is packaging materials (cardboard, paper, and plastic), in addition to waste food and sewage sludge. While much of the solid waste generated at base camps is biologically degradable, the solid waste problem presents significant waste management challenges for the U.S. Army. This is a particular concern when we operate in countries where there are few— if any—modern waste disposal facilities.

An integrated approach of composting methodologies for solid waste management
Organic fraction of solid waste, which upon degradation produces foul smell and generates pathogens, if not properly managed. Composting is not a method of waste disposal but it is a method of waste recycling and used for agricultural purposes. An integrated approach of composting methodology was tested for municipal solid waste management. Solid waste first was composted and after 22 days, was...
متن کاملFate of Formaldehyde in MDF Sawdust during MSW Composting
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) sawdust is an important source of carbon and is therefore in demand as an amendment in commercial municipal solid waste (MSW) composting operations. However, MDF contains formaldehyde which causes two concerns. The first one is that the bactericidal and fungicidal properties of formaldehyde may adversely affect the composting process. The second one is that forma...

The management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Nigeria and most developing countries has remained a major public health challenge, thus creating the need for reliable and environmentally-acceptable alternatives. This study focuses on composting assessment as a viable recovery alternative for MSW in six States of Southwest Nigeria, namely: Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos. Extensive lit...

Background & Aims of the Study: One of the most important pollutants in drinking water, air and soils is heavy metals. It is very harmful for humans and other live organisms. The purpose of this study was the usage of a co-composting process for removal of heavy metals from municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was a condu...
متن کاملMunicipal Solid Waste Composting - a Review
Generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) continues to rise, which leads to loss of resources and increased environmental risks. The conventional treatment of wastes such as open dumping and land filling cause environmental degradation. Since the major fraction of wastes generated in India is organic wastes, composting has emerged as one of the best methods for treatment of wastes. Composting, ...
